Feeling grateful

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! I know I did. In fact, I had two celebrations, one at our house in Brooklyn (our first!) and one at my sister-in-law’s in Erie, PA. If you ask me, both were successes, but for different reasons.

Me and my niece, AnnieThe first was great (ahem, if I do say so myself), not only because my family came to visit us, but because we snuck bacon into every possible dish. I slipped it (along with butter, sage, lemon zest, thyme, salt and pepper) under the skin of our turkey, and my better half also threw some into our green bean casserole. Aw, yeah!

Kernels of GratitudeMy sister-in-law’s was wonderful, too, not only because it snowed a little, but also because we started a new tradition. Each person got a few kernels of popcorn at the table. Rather than forcing everyone to announce what he or she is thankful for, we were instructed to silently pass our kernels to the center of the table at any time during the meal, whenever we thought of something for which we were grateful. I passed all four of my kernels at once. It was so easy!

Leftovers!I’m also thankful for leftovers, which I froze in TV-dinner-style portions. For homebrewing beer. For the Chinese food that was just delivered. And for Dexter on Sunday nights. Also, for all of my new friends in the blogosphere. It’s so nice to meet you!

I’m going to savor these last few hours of the holiday weekend. Hope you do, too!

  1. I think Thanksgiving, properly celebrated, allows us to make it to the New Year in the proper frame of mind. Thanks for validating me! 😉

I just stumbled on your site in a roundabout sort of way while procrastinating from work (and getting on a mailing list in hopes of winning your book!). But I’m commenting because I love bacon and when I hear of others with the same love, I just have to say “Hi, bacon-loving friend!” Why didn’t I think of bacon in the green bean dish this year?! I also love the popcorn kernel idea. Did you then pop up all the kernels and eat them up, or would that be wrong? 🙂

Anytime, LFC! And hi, Tara! I’m so glad you commented. Any day when I get to talk about/think about/write about bacon is a sizzling good day!
