Oh and can I share a grandfather quip with you? My grandfather was a jack of all trades but a cabinet builder by trade. We were building my father a workshop and we were hammering studs. He had on overalls and the way he was standing was so that his back was to the stud and he was hammering away. He tried to walk away but had nailed his overalls to the 2 X4. He just looked at me and said "Well I guess it's time for a break." Then he just leaned up against the 2 X 4 and took a nap standing up. He told me later that you have to take advantage of every opportunity.

I have one cyber friend who bought a bunch of copies for the upcoming wedding season.

I will be watching to pre-order this one.

One of my favorite recipes is for whole wheat bread. The ultimate comfort food. My great-grandmother, grandmother and mother are experts. My mother remembers that she and her sister would knead their pillows at night pretending to make bread like their mother.

WHOLE WHEAT BREAD

1 cup warm water
1 TBSP sugar
2 heaping TBSP yeast

Combine warm water, sugar and yeast. Let stand until foamy. In a mixing bowl put:

4 cups water
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup honey
2 TBSP salt

Mix well and add:

2-3 cups whole wheat flour

Mix well and add:

Yeast mixture

Mix for about 5 minutes and then add:

5-6 cups whole wheat or white flour

Be careful here as whole wheat flour absorbs a bit more liquid than white.
Mix until dough is soft but not sticky to the touch. Knead for 5 minutes. Cover and let rise until double in size. Pour out on floured surface and punch down. Make into 4 loaves. Put loaves into greased loaf pans. Let rise until not quite double. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Turn out on rack and as my Grandpa says "Break open a loaf and grab the butter and honey!"

Phew - a long comment!

I love my Whirley Pop too! Chris and I tried to make the Kettle Corn recipe in the little booklet that came with the pot but it really didn't work out well. I'll have to give your recipe a try :)

I'm looking forward to the new book! Oh, how I wish I still had a grandfather. Both of mine were farmers, and full of practical knowledge. My mother's father (8 children of his own who each had 6 or more children of their own) would look over all of us, piled on each other in the living room, and boom out "Everybody Happy?" And we were. Very.
